There's a book called The Disease to Please by Harriet Braiker, PhD. In the book she says that people pleasers are addicts. The disease to please is very common, especially among women and even more so among those who suffer from low self-esteem. We climb the wrong ladders leaned against the wrong walls. Since then, it has been my mission to have my Mother's' Day. Are you a future bride that has the “disease to please?” Are you struggling with which type of wedding you should have? As in life, I took on too much. In talking with a reporter the other day she mentioned that women are often handicapped by the “disease to please,” a term I had never heard before. We search for happiness in the wrong places, often in a desperate attempt to people please. Trying to please people is a disease, or a sickness. Years ago, I remember an old boyfriend telling me up front ….within the first few months of dating… that “I am a Pleaser.” He told me like it was some kind of identity badge. Are you pulled in various directions from your future husband, friends and/or family? I took this on from a very early age. This wasn't my break from the most intense year of motherhood ever. I could never be a medical transcriptionist. I was unclear if he was proud of it or just warning me. I hear many women voice they battle overcoming the need to please….or we can also call it the “disease to please”.
